Senare denna månad släpps Henrik Möllers DVD “Kaninhoran och andra barndomsminnen från Malmö”, som samlar det mesta och bästa av hans kortfilmsproduktion (innehåller alltså inte Malmö-filmerna som gjorts tillsammans med Video Direkt.), till exempel “Det trötta hatet” som visas ovan och de ritade Rufus-filmerna. Testbild! medverkar med en del musik på DVD:n. I vissa fall är musiken specialskriven (som till menyerna), men i andra fall används låtar från skivorna. Det är inte Friendly Noise som ger ut “Kaninhoran…”, men vi gillar Henrik Möller och vill gärna tipsa om att man kan förbeställa DVD:n här.

Last year the Stockholm group Top Sound played live at the Friendly Noise club at Sugar Bar. Now we’re happy to release a single by them in our ongoing free mp3 series. If you’ve heard “A matter of precision” and “Francophilie” before do note that these are new and definite versions; proper late Summer hits!

This is the new single from The Dreamers, the duo of Kevin Wright and Sarah Nyberg Pergament. It’s their first release since the beautiful “Day For Night” album in 2007. Kevin and Sarah has meanwhile been busy with own projects; Kevin with recording and releasing the new Mr. Wright album out now on the Series Two label, and Sarah and Friendly Noise have, of course, released the debut Action Biker album “Hesperian Puisto”. “Någon Annan” (which some may remember from The Dreamers’ concerts, it was actually at #1 in the Digfi chart as early as 2007 on the strength of being heard live) and “My Stupid Heart” are two songs to download for free; enjoy and spread them as much as you like! The video are by Geoff Howell, who previously has produced moving images for Testbild! and Action Biker.

Here’s Kevin Wright on the new The Dreamers single:
“These two pieces are our personal favourites of all our songs. ‘Någon Annan’ started life in English but the words never sounded quite right. I suggested Sarah try and translate it into French but she had a better idea and our first Swedish song was born. Suddenly it gained a poetry it didn’t have in the original. We played it live and got a good reaction straight away, the emotion contained seems to be universal. Both songs are very simple. I only realised ‘My Stupid Heart’ was any good when I heard Sarah sing it. You often don’t realise what you have done until later. The recordings, done in Stockholm, are very simple and unadorned and contain something of the beauty we hoped for all along.”

Sarah Nyberg Pergament (Action Biker, The Dreamers) has composed music for “Lose Lose Situation: Live in Russia!”, a dance/performance by the coreographer Daniel Andersson taking place on 17 May (7 PM) in St Petersburg in Russia at a dance/litterature festival called BODYWORD. The address is Place club (Marshala Govorova str. 45).

# Following “Aquatint” by Testbild! it’s time for the second release in Friendly Noise’s 2009 limited edition series: “Hearthand” by Liminals. Pre-order it at the Friendly Noise shop!

# Liminals is a brand new project from Differnet members Tomas Bodén and Anna-Karin Brus and “Hearthand” (FYN 102) is their first release as Liminals. It’s a vinyl album (actually the first Friendly Noise vinyl release), including four long songs: “The swim”, “Hands (for Rosemary Brown)”, “Rubicon (dub mix)” and “Shine”. Total running time: 41:25 minutes

# Here’s Liminals’ own description of their techno pop: “Music for imaginary dancefloors. Music for walking, swimming or dancing in your sleep. Not so much underground as underwater: a loop in an ocean of sound, the sound of an ocean in a loop.”

# “Hearthand” will be released in a limited edition of 300 copies. For the first 100 pre-ordered copies the cover will be a handprinted, signed and numbered drawing by Anna-Karin Brus.

# It will also be available at Klicktrack and other download services, meaning unlimited availability for anyone who wants the music.

# As a taster you can listen to “The Swim” at Friendly Noise’s myspace. And here’s Liminals at Facebook.. Another taster is the first Liminals concert at New Media Meeting in Norrköping 28 May.

# It’s not until we receive 100 pre-orders that we will send the record to the manufacturing place. If not 100 people are interested in the artefact then we might release it as mp3:s instead. Or not at all.

# Those who pre-order an artefact will be guaranteed a copy of it, and you will be the first one who gets it. We will also always include an exclusive present, a poster or something similar in the package.

Two tracks from the forthcoming album by Testbild! entitled Aquatint. Following last year’s Une teinte intense, an album light as a mirage, that bridges pop, jazz and exotica in the sun-bleached deserts of North Africa, Aquatint is, instead, an outburst of underwater inspiration.

“My Brother the Submariner” is originally a song by The Hepburns that finds its message explored further by Testbild!. “Garnet Brand Land” is set somewhere over the waves yet under the stars. Possibly near the coast of Mexico, by the sound of it.

Den noisiga audiovisuella duon Ectoplasm Girls, bestående av systrarna Nadine och Tanya Byrne, ger ut sitt debutalbum på Ideal Recordings senare i år. “In the project we express our joint fascination and experiences with death and dreams.”

GOEMSTELLET
I gränslandet mellan finstämd pop, ljudkonst och drömlandskap stämmer Stockholm/Visby-baserade duon Goemstellet upp sin sällsamma sång. Det blir eklektiskt, konstigt och vackert.

JOAKIM SANDSTRÖM/INTUITION TOLD ME
Joakim Sandström från fanzinet/bloggen Intuition Told Me: “Jag vill spela vacker, harmonisk musik. Typ Durutti Column, Blue Nile, Michael Rother. Det blir ett soundtrack till en idealiserad värld.”

“Lady Macbeth” is an old, though previously not released, seven minute long song, probably recorded in the Summer of 2003, that Friendly Noise got from Differnet early in 2004. Never have Differnet sounded more shoegazey than this! They had almost forgotten about “Lady Macbeth” but we thought it was a good idea to finally release this old favourite of ours to coincide with the Friendly Noise night at Sugar Bar 7 August (2008), where Differnet played live, supported by french/japanese artist Kumi. That night we also sold a limited 3″ cd-r edition of it. Tomas, from Differnet, also told us that the original, proper title of “Lady Macbeth” is “Somnambulist” (meaning a person that goes sleepwalking).

Denna kväll blir det live-musik med:

KUMI
Kumi Okamoto har varit medlem i dels poptrion The Konki Duet, som gett ut ett par album på franska etiketten Active Suspension, dels Tokyo-baserade frankofila duon Crazy Curl (Channel Pro). Nu har Kumi även en solokarriär och kommer denna torsdag till Stockholm och spelar sin j-pop live.

DIFFERNET
2008 har varit ett ganska tyst år för Differnet, förutom den helt magnfika spelningen på Friendly Noises femårskalas i våras. Men nu gör Differnet en av sina sällsynta spelningar med full besättning, med alla fyra medlemmar på plats på scen.

Friendly Noise passar även på att ge ut en ny singel med Differnet, “Lady Macbeth”. Det är en gammal outgiven och fantastisk låt som delar av Friendly Noise tjatat om länge, efter att ha fått den på en cdr för typ fem år sedan, en låt som Differnet själva helt har glömt bort. Den kommer spridas som mp3, från och med nästa vecka på vår hemsida, och under Sugar Bar-kvällen finns en limiterad 3″-upplaga till försäljning.

En utgivningsfrenesi som inte ser ut att avta. Den 3 juni, på Friendly Noise-klubben på Sugar Bar, är det premiär för The Morning Papers nya musikvideo och det första av flera impressionistiska ”filmdokument” rörande Friendly Noise.

I en av Sebastian Rozenbergs senaste filmer står han själv för första gången framför kameran. Det är inte det enda som skiljer detta fragment till film – de är oftast bara någon minut – från hans tidigare verk. Den är svartvit och stum, inga klipp. Vi är inomhus, studentrummets fönster är antagligen stängt, där ute har solen gått i moln. Musiken av. Regissören står med bar överkropp, stirrar in i kameran, blundar och andas in och andas ut, öppnar ögonen – ler? Den heter ”too sad to let it show” och beskrivs alltså bäst i kontrast till Rozenbergs andra filmer där färgen, musiken, infallet och blinkningar till en kulturhistoria är kännetecken.

Några mejlfrågor till Sebastian Rozenberg.

Du tar hela tiden nya uttryck ditt i filmskapande, som förvisso ännu är ungt. Vill du hitta hem i form och miljö, eller är du nöjd på vägen – sökande?
- Jag är definitivt nöjd på vägen. De filmer jag gör nu är jag verkligen nöjd med, men självklart söker jag vidare. Kommer aldrig komma hem men kommer hela tiden närmare bilden jag har i mitt huvud innan jag börjar…

Hur ser skaparprocessen ut? Vad inspireras du av?
- Processen är till att börja med helt intuitiv, känslomässig, det är det enda vettiga liksom. Jag blundar och fantiserar, bläddrar bland bilder och böcker och så. Smyger in så mycket subtil symbolik som jag vågar. Sen blir det mer och mer hantverk när man ska få det att fungera som en helhet mot slutet.
- Det här med förebilder är ju lite knepigt, men, i den här The Morning Paper-videon som jag gjort nu har jag inspirerats ganska mycket av videokonstnären Rose Lowder; blinkande fragment som på nåt sätt stannar upp. Annars; Claire Denis’ film “Trouble Every Day” lämnar mig aldrig, inte Whit Stillmans “Metropolitan” heller men de är väl ganska mycket motsatser, vet inte om det märks i det jag gör att jag gillar dem heller.
- Mathew Barney har varit en förebild för mig sen jag var tonåring, grejen med honom för mig är att han bara sätter igång med vilka vansinnesprojekt som helst: bygger upp omfattande helheter, skulpterar, filmar osv. Sen lockas jag av både det mytiska och det sexuella hos honom, precis som hos Claire Denis. Lite motvilligt förtjust i Terence Koh, utan motvilja förtjust i Raphael och Chagall…

Ditt användande av fragment och skissen är intressant. Fragmentet är ett poetiskt uttryckssätt. Och några av dina filmer är uttryckligen poetiska. Vad lockar med fragmentet?
- Det fragmentariska är spännande. Det är som att öppna en dörr på glänt och varken stänga den eller öppna den, definitionen av var den leder ligger hos åskådaren. Jag är väldigt förtjust i subtil symbolik, är sedan länge fascinerad av Jung… Där passar det skissartade in, det finns en stor laddning i det. Gillar att post-jungianerna börjar få lite upprättelse internationellt nu…

Our two new records, “Hesperian Puisto” (FYN 69) by Action Biker and the “Splendid Isolation” (FYN 68) compilation, are finally here. Support Friendly Noise and our artists and buy the records in our new web shop!

“Hesperian Puisto” was officially released in Scandinavia (distribution by Border) last Wednesday and DN, the biggest morning paper in Sweden, gave it a positive 4 out of 5 grade review. Action Biker also did a Digfi Session the other week, where she’s interviewed and play some of the songs off the album.

“Splendid Isolation” will be released through shops in Scandinavia next week, but the official release party for it will be a little bit later, at the next Friendly Noise club night at Sugar Bar in Stockholm. That’s on Tuesday 6 May, and Erik de Vahl, one of the “Splendid Isolation” contributors, will perform an acoustic set live, his first concert in 18 months. DJ:s during that night will be people from the other “Splendid Isolation” groups.

On Monday the new records will be available to download at Klicktrack , and then later this Spring more properly available in America, Japan and the UK.

Vi firar utgivningen av Action Bikers debutalbum “Hesperian Puisto” genom en liten tillställning på Berlin Sthlm (Skånegatan 71) onsdag 16/4.

* Then, on Thursday 27 March, there’s a Friendly Night at Debaser Slussen, where Testbild!, Most Valuable Players and Differnet will perform live. The same night we hope our two new records will be available for the first time: “Splendid Isolation” (FYN 068), a compilation of a selection of songs from our 2007 mp3 series, and “Hesperian Puisto”, the long-awaited debut album from Action Biker (FYN 069). A beautiful video for “Rondo” is now available online. It’s made by Most Valuable Players’ friend Sebastian Rozenberg, who says that he has attempted something in the line of the song’s musical structure with his film.

To co-incide with this release Action Biker will perform live - her first Stockholm concert in a year - at the release party for the first issue of FLM, a new, ambitious magazine about film (”Initierade texter om rörliga bilder och allt som hör till - spaningar, reportage och kritik”). During the night there will also be the premiere screening of Sebastian Rozenberg’s video for Most Valuable Players’ song “Rondo”, the recent Friendly Noise single. “In our endless quest to try to introduce you to interesting sounds ahead of the curve, we bring you six new titles from Friendly Noise. Based in Skarpnack, Sweden, the label’s output combines the styles and sensibilities of imprints like Morr Music, Karaoke Kalk, Type, and Hapna. You can also detect a sort of post-Belle and Sebastian charm in their artists, the musicality and orchestration bolstered by an overall sophistication that unintentionally seems to reference Les Disques du Crepuscule.

One of the most recent Friendly Noise releases, Testbild!’s Une Teinte Intense is a good one to start with to get an overall sense of the label. Excellent production qualities showcase a variety of modern, trans-continental pop thanks to old-fashioned songwriting decorated with sampled bits and field recordings. What results sounds like the United Nations of Antena: a little dubby indie tropicalia here, a little Arabian ambient pop there, a little mod-pop Free Design/ indie-lounge a la Sea and Cake there; but Testbild! maintain a skilled balance of sweet and mature throughout.

The Dreamers’ Day for Night is another great release for trying out Friendly Noise. Featuring a male/female duo with the vocal texture and cadence of Broadcast’s Trish Keenan, but with its own musicality, personality and atmosphere set in a breeze-blown, sun-drenched pasture, the record is really charming and full of self-assured confidence — light on its feet in that Brazilian way and positive in that modern indie way, but solid and thoughtfully written. The Dreamers are very easy to like but definitely not just another guilty pleasure.

Och skivan är helt underbar! Det är en estetiskt fulländad temaskiva, en slags hyllning till den fascinerande schweiziska reportern och upptäcksresanden Isabelle Eberhardt. Låter det pretentiöst? Att få med hela den palett av innehållsmässiga färgklickar som faktiskt finns här (historiskt perspektiv, icke-europeiskt perspektiv, litterärt perspektiv och genusperspektiv för att ta några exempel) och knyta ihop det till en välljudande popskiva med både djup och bredd, ja, det är rätt och slätt imponerande.

Kissing Mirrors
Debaser Medis, fredag kl 19-3
Det är i mötet mellan de tvärflöjtspelande oskulderna från Södra Latin och texterna om sex, död och petit fours som det uppstår något intressant. Pretentiösa elvamannabandet Kissing Mirrors, med kapellmästare Per Johansson i spetsen, gör musik av helt andra skäl än att hänga i replokalen och kanske få släppa en platta, och är självfallet alldeles för bra för Sverige.

The Dreamers

Sarah Nyberg Pergament, mer känd som Action Biker, och Kevin Wright, Always, har duon The Dreamers ihop, och att få den där lättheten att inte bara bli en kuliss är så svårt. Men i bossastunderna låter de som Englands bästa band, The Montgolfier Brothers, och i “A Place I Know” glömmer man bort längtan efter Sveriges dito, Eggstone.

Friendly Noise planerade en releasefest för The Dreamers debutalbum och Digfi började känna att det var dags för en Digfi:Mix-kväll. Så vi slog våra kloka huvuden ihop och bestämde oss för ett samarrangemang: således ordnar vi Digfi:Mix slash releasefest för The Dreamers debutalbum “Day For Night” på Stacken onsdag 10 oktober.

The Dreamers och Enheten för musik och melodi kommer spela live och diverse folk från Friendly Noise och Digfi spelar skivor. Det blir en rätt jazzig kväll, både The Dreamers och Enheten för musik och melodi har tydliga jazzinslag i sin musik. DJ:ar gör självfallet ett sällskap kräsna selectors från Digfi och Friendly Noise. I enlighet med kvällens tema så blir det en hel del jazzvarianter även från DJ-båset.

Duon The Dreamers består av Sarah Nyberg Pergament, mer känd som Action Biker, och Kevin Wright, mer känd under sina artistnamn Always och Mr Wright (den senare rosades av kritikerna för albumet “Metropolitan” 2004). De två möttes på en festival 2004 och började skissa på ett gemensamt projekt. Det första resultatet var låten ‘Petit Nuage’ som tillkom 2005, inspirerade av detta första alster fördjupades samarbetet per korrespondens, Kevin skapade musik i London medan Sarah la på sång i Helsingfors och Stockholm. Duons musik kan beskrivas som en melankolisk och atmosfärisk mix där pop, jazz och filmmusik är tongivande. Enheten för musik och melodi är en stockholmsensemble (med vissa göteborgsinslag) som det började talas om sent 2006 efter en trivsamt trång spelning på klubben Cul de sac på numera nedlagda Sugar Bar. Dessutom har fullständig frånvaro på internet gjort sitt till att nyfikenheten kring bandet stegrats. Några exklusiva exemplar av en tiospårs cdr med titeln “Musik för stadsmiljö” har varit högattraktiva under början av hösten, på den skivan visar bandet att det finns fog för haussen och serverar en delikat blandning av easy listening, cocktailstänkt acid jazz, tropicadelica, bossa och prog med scatsång och rikligt med elpiano och blås. “Det hemlighetsfulla cocktailpopbandet Testbild! från Malmö återvänder här med ännu en samling fjäderlätta sensommarmelodier. Det är den fjärde skivan i ordningen, som vanligt är musiken betydligt mer mångbottnad än vad den först ger sken av. Bandet, som består av Stepbrother Ernest, Jana T Mekka, Nathaniel Mist, Goliath Quadslums, Furian Sibér och Dustin Spunkvolt, odlar stolt sin egen myt. “Une Teinte Intense” är ett temaalbum av rang, helt dedikerat den gåtfulla schweiziska författaren och upptäcktsresanden Isabelle Eberhardt, som gick bort i en flodväg i Algeriet 1904 då hon bara vara tjugosju år gammal. Eberhardts drömlikt heroiska och okonventionella levnadsöde återfinns i de ordfetischistiska texterna, det fotoalbumliknande konvolutet och naturligtvis i själva musiken, som andas exotism och outforskade marker.

Inleder och avslutar gör två monologer på franska (och fler monologer finns på skivan). De ger intrycket av privata anteckningar, ungefär som starkt graverande upplevelser som torrt har strukturerats upp i verbal form. Pratet utgör en stark kontrast till musiken, som låter pur tonsatt känsla - men som naturligtvis är inramad av väldigt mycket tanke, med minituöst utförda arrangemang. De eteriska melodierna flyger fram på daggstänkta berg fallera, över vidder där sockersöt swindie à la Eggstone möter frankofilt sextiotal, sval bossanova, ökenhet orientpercussion, suggestiva miljöljud och en sagoklingande orkestrering. De utsökta körpartierna, som på “Labyrinthine”, är så nätta och ljuvliga att man nästan smälter bort under färden. “Une Teinte Intense” är en sann pärla och Testbild! kommer genom sin finess och musikaliska briljans än en gång undan med att vara ganska pretentiösa.”

“Testbild! own that Zetterlund song. I never would have known it wasn’t theirs. Lovely work, the whole mp3 release series. I haven’t heard the original, but I do have several discs by Monica Z that Magnus Boman picked up for cheap somewhere. And I just can’t hear Monica (or anyone else) in the cover version. It’s thoroughly Testbild!’s, even with the new female vocals in the Testbild! mix. Curiously, it didn’t even occur to me that it was unusual for them to be singing in Swedish, either.”

“När Monica Zetterlund sjöng “En gång i Stockholm” i Eurovisionsschlagerfinalen i London 1963 kom bidraget på delad sistaplats med noll poäng. Enligt Beppe.se, en hemsida där journalisten Klas Gustafson bland annat samlat material som inte fick plats i boken “Beppe. Biografin” (Albert Bonniers förlag, 2003), fick låten i ett teveprogram utmärkelsen Svensktippen, som “Sveriges sämsta låt”. Inte desto mindre har den blivit en svensk klassiker. Musiken i lyrisk visstil skrevs av Bobbie Ericsson och Beppe Wolgers text om en vinterseglats i Stockholm var inspirerad av teaterregissören Per Edström som lär ha haft för vana att komma in mitt i vintern och säga att han varit ute och seglat. Svalka i värmen blir det när indiebolaget Friendly Noise nu sjösätter “En gång i Stockholm” som sommarsingel. Men aldrig kyligt. “A new Anglo/Swedish project formed by Kevin Wright, former Always and also known for his music made as Mr Wright and Sarah Nyberg Pergament, also known from Action Biker. First meeting when both played at a music festival in Sweden they found a shared sensibility in music and other arts. Starting to write songs just over a year ago an album started taking shape. Working with producer/musician Toby Robinson the record is now finished and will be released by Swedish label Friendly Noise in the autumn. Live dates are also now being added in London in August and later this year in Sweden and Finland. The Dreamers make the sad music that makes the world a happier place.”

We’d love to send review copies to good, interested writers/fanzines/blogs/magazines et cetera. In Sweden we have a pretty good idea to whom we should send promos to. But internationally it’s, well Tangents, Ned Raggett, Radio Helsinki and… not so many others that have shown interest during the years. How come? That the records are crap? Well, it hasn’t stopped other records to be reviewed, has it? Today, to coincide with the event of “Collapsing Universe”, we finally have put all our releases at Klicktrack, to have a place for people to buy downloads of mp3:s of our records legally.

* Testbild! has announced some new details about their next album, we quote: “The new Testbild! album will be called Une Teinte Intense, and will be released by Friendly Noise in the beginning of September this year. It’s yet another thematical album, this time about Isabelle Eberhardt, one of the true heroes of this world. Stay tuned for new songs and more info!”

* And Kissing Mirrors have been booked to play at Parkteatern Under Eken, when Ondskan curates one of the days during Lava’s three day residence there at 12-14 June. They have also put up a brand new song, “Fuck Me Like A Millionaire”, on myspace.
